Chapter 14

With the most difficult conversation out of the way, an encounter that had started well, gone south in a hurry, then managed to stabilize before I did irreparable damage to our friendship, I decided to see if Geraldine’s brother might be able to offer some insight. I wasn’t sure if the source of Geraldine’s anger came from my reaction to the news of her affair with the unnamed celebrity or whether she had taken my circular questions as an accusation of her possible involvement in her father’s murder.

If I was honest with myself, it was probably a bit of both.

I was still having a hard time believing she was capable of taking another person’s life, especially the man who had raised her, did his best in his own strange way to teach her right from wrong, and provide for her and her brother. But I was also having a hard time putting aside the fact the Red Diamond Dagger was directly related to her career as a procurer of rare artifacts. And with several million dollars at stake for an item she might logically assume should be hers, sadly, I could make it work.

The nagging thought, while it might offer testimony to my powers of deduction, probably made me a crappy friend. Another wave of guilt-ridden, self-loathing washed over me as I glanced around the crowded lawn. I finally spotted Billy and Séance sitting by themselves near one of the bars. Judging by the number of empty glasses on the table, they’d been taking advantage of its proximity.

I worked my way through the crowd and stopped several times to chat with various guests. I hadn’t seen some of them in years, and my progress was slow. Halfway across the lawn, Chief Abrams and his wife waved me over.

“There she is,” Chief Abrams said, giving me an evil grin. “The Teenage Terror of Clay Bay.”

I flinched at the nickname my mother had bestowed on me when I was sixteen soon after she had popped into the sitting area of the maze where Jeffrey Daniels and I were getting better acquainted.

“Don’t start,” I said, glaring at him.

“I told her it was such a good story, she should weave it into her toast at the reception,” the Chief said.

“Leave her alone,” Sue said. “You never did anything embarrassing when you were a teenager?”

“Sure,” the Chief said. “But not in front of my mother.”

“Don’t listen to him, Suzy,” she said, scowling at her husband. “I’m going to get another drink. Can I get you anything?”

“Maybe a muzzle for him,” I said, nodding at the Chief. “No, I’m good.”

“I’ll be right back,” she said as she headed off.

“Sorry,” Chief Abrams said, still grinning. “I couldn’t resist. How did your conversation with Geraldine go?”

“Not well. Between my questions about what might have happened to her dad, combined with my reaction to the affair she’s having with a married man, it kind of went downhill in a hurry.”

“She came right out and told you about the affair?”

“When we were in high school, we used to tell each other everything,” I said.
